What is zodiac?

The 12 constellations that mark the path where sun travels over the course of one year are known as zodiac in astrology. The term ‘sun travels over a year’ is however a loose one as the sun never travels but it is an illusion created by the revolution of earth. Each of these 12 constellations has a boundary assigned, which spans 30-degree.

They also have signs attached to them and they are closely related to the way Earth moves in the universe. The dates of horoscope correspond to the position of constellation when sun passes through them.
However as the motion of the Sun, Stars and Earth is never same, the dates of horoscope fluctuate vastly.

How are the boundaries of constellations determined?

The boundaries of the modern constellation were defined in 1930 by the International Astronomical Union after many scientific calculations and calibrations. Actually there are 13 constellations, but the 13^th one known Ophiuchus or the Serpent Bearer is not listed in astrology. The boundaries change over the years, and the boundaries today will be totally different from the boundaries 1000 years from now due to the changing location of the vernal equinox.

What are the 12 zodiacs?

The 12 zodiacs are determined by the position of sun in a particular constellation at the time of birth. As the sun remains in a particular constellation for a month, the zodiac sign remains same for a month. The sun never retrogrades, hence the order of the signs always remain the same, with Aries being first followed by Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and lastly, Pisces.

All zodiac signs are associated to a planet which is known as its ruler.
