Dasha or period in Astrology

Period in astrologyAstrology is a science of predicting events in the life of an individual. Those events would not knock the door of the native randomly, but at specific age. This time specific prediction is based on Dasha system.

According to Vedic astrology, effect of nine planets on the native is taken into consideration. But all these planets are not active at the same time. They show their influence with time. So the period, during which any particular planet is most effective, is termed as Dasha of particular period. The auspicious planets in the horoscope or auspicious combinations either due to their placement or aspect become fruitful during Dashas of particular planet.

There are many types of Dasha systems in Vedic Astrology, but the most commonly studied is Vimshottri System. According to it, the total life span of an individual is considered to be of 120 years and all planets show their effect for particular number of years. The Mahadasha at the birth of native is determined by position of the moon. The Mahadashas of planets usually follow the following order:

1.       Ketu is effective for 7 years.
2.       Venus is effective for 20 years.
3.       Sun is effective for 6 years.
4.       Moon is effective for 10 years.
5.       Mars is effective for 7 years.
6.       Rahu is effective for 18 years.
7.       Jupiter is effective for 16 years.
8.       Saturn is effective for 19 years.
9.       Mercury is effective for 17 years.

These Mahadashas have antardashas or sub periods which also follow the same pattern i.e., Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. It is further divided into pratyantardasha which is sub divided into sookshmaantardasha.

An age of 120 years is spent by very few individuals; thus, all the Mahadashas may not be experienced by an individual during his life span.
